WEEK 6 - Orca Encounters by Isabelle Groc

BAR

1. Springer’s story was incorporated because it was showing a comparison of methods used with the Dolphins and options of returning them to their homes. Unlike Luna, Springer was automatically captured and brought back to her pod, and her safety was assured. The way Springer’s situation was handled in comparison to Luna’s was a lot more thought out, and based more on the Dolphins safety rather than Human wants. Luna was turned into a human attraction, rather than guided back to his family. The segment on Springer contributes a “What If…” ideal to the essay, as it shows a way in which Luna’s life span could have been prolonged, although the Dolphins situations were different.

2. While reading the essay, I did have a slight emotional response, especially when it was reported that Luna died after having been such a friend to Humans. However, Groc used an array of different perspectives when detailing what should have happened or did happen to the Dolphin. Some scientists commented that it be retuned with human intervention, some people (like the First Nations people claiming the orca to have been a recently deceased chief) disagreed. It was hard to place blame or even become emotional with the Dolphins fate, because ultimately, it had run its course. It was happy with the human interaction, but unfortunately that caused its demise.
