WEEK 3 - Denaturalizing 'Natural' Disasters: Haiti's Earthquake and the Humanitarian Impulse by Andrew D. Pinto

BAR

1. I think the last two paragraphs form a successful conclusion to Pinto's argument. He uses a concession to contrast the positives of both sides of his formulated spectrum. He stresses that although the 'laudable' humanitarian effort was beneficial to Haiti's relief efforts, we should also awgkowledge our role in the reason there are relief efforts to start with. By initially understanding in the conclusion that our efforts are appreciated, Pinto then continues to criticize the fundamentals of our efforts and how they can be spread out long term. Haiti's main issue with this disaster is that their political efforts were too weak to support the aftermath (in terms of sickness, shelter), and therefore more people died in the process. If there forces were strong enough to quickly combat the issues of the Earthquake, there would be a lot less fatalities. In Pinto's conclusion, he further addresses this by stating that we should take part in the support of Haiti's organizations, civil societies and government institutions, so they can become able to help themselves, especially if a similar situation were to happen again. In summation, Pinto's concluding paragraphs were very successful as they made the reader aware of the positivity of their efforts but also fathom their next steps in order to secure Haiti's humanitarism.
